I have no idea what history is going to look back on the 2010's in terms of its contributions to music and culture. I've held off looking at any one else's decade end album lists until I've completed my futile statement. I'm sure they'll be dominated with the usual scatterings of hip-hop, pop and other genres.
At the beginning of the decade I spent some time as a community DJ at WQFS, Guilford College Radio and opened myself to a world of musical adventure which found myself gravitating toward indie rock while attempting to see if any music was still a source of passion, a rallying cry, a means to call to action. Somethings don't change. This is look back at the past ten years through my blurry rose colored glasses.
I'm not one to set parameters but for the decade end list I limited the number of albums for any one artist to two which would eliminate, say, 14 albums of Ty Segall's from ending up on this list. The result is that there are artists that have more than one album on the list but some difficult decisions had to be made as to which ones to cut. Some simply didn't age well.
I also included the final year end ranking from their release year. A number of albums weren't even ranked the year they came out. Oversights, yes. One album in particular was fantastic but was not included due to its graphically real subject matter. One album I hadn't heard until six months ago. Oh and not an over abundance of shitty over the hill rock stars. I'll let the corporate magazine blogs handle that.
A music fan will only talk about the music they love and leave the hating to the critics. Enjoy!
